PLANETARY DETAILS:
he planet Donegal was Seth Marsden's destination after he resigned from Ian McQuiston's trading company. Having seen early reports of the world's abundant resources and strategic location, he knew that Donegal would one day become an important and profitable world. By taking ownership of it, Mardsen ensured the success of his own trading company and spurred the eventual creation of the entire Protectorate of Donegal.

The planet is a mostly temperate world filled with unusual vegetation and wildlife, some of which are exported to other worlds for their food value. Beneath the surface of Donegal are rich deposits of industrial diamonds, rare earths, and metals, which are heavily exploited.

Donegal is known as the 'Trader's World', and has spawned dozens of importing and exporting companies. Media City, Wellington, Sidley, Palar, and Novorossisk are the main trading centers, spread out over three continents. Donegal also has two working space settlements in orbit around LaGrange points. They are a shabby pair, however, nicknamed 'the Tin Cans' and tending to attract traders of a seedier sort.

The fact that Donegal hosts the most active Commonwealth Stock Exchange is a sign of its political and economic importance. Donegal is also the home of the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth.

Donegal is also the one of the main centers of Judaism in the Commonwealth. The Ohav Shalom is a huge, ornate synagogue and teaching campus, situated against the sun-baked mountains of the planet's northern continent.

The University of Washington on Donegal is House Steiner's computer research center. Heavily funded by Nashan Computers, this university nestles amid the Queen Anne Hills of the Seattle continent and is equipped with probably the best computer science facility in the entire Inner Sphere. Though tuition fees are high, enough scholarships and government grants are awarded to ensure that every class is filled.

Another famous institution located on Donegal, is the Chewska School of Literature, one of the Commonwealths most prestigious arts colleges.

Located in Media City, the Donegal Broadcasting Company is the Commonwealth's major news and information outlet. The most viable division of the DBC is the Commonwealth Press, whose reports and cameramen are assigned to most of the major Steiner worlds, where they supply highly opinionated stories for dissemination by holo, newsprint, radio, and video mass media. The DBC's nightly program, The Evening News, is the most widely watched news program in the realm. The anchor of the show, Kari Andersen, is arguably the most recognizable personality in the Commonwealth. both his critics and fans would probably agree that Andersen could make people believe Lord Kurita is a true humanitarian, and that JumpShips are powered by little hamsters running in exercise wheels.

Socio-Industrial Levels:
Technological Development
High-tech world with advanced research centers and universities; best medical care available; cutting-edge microelectronics industry.
Industrialization Level
Heavily industrialized world capable of manufacturing any and all complex output.

Industrial Output
World has a wide industrial base that produces many different types of products and exports most of its output.
Agricultural Dependence
World has a rich environment producing a great excess of food in relation to population needs, with planet’s agricultural regions augmented by agricultural technologies; exports some portion of its resources.

EMPLOYER SITUATION REPORT:
The University of Washington (U-Wash) on Donegal has recently made some incredible breakthroughs in computer science technology. One of these breakthroughs is a new type of HPG protection software that may help to counter some of the HPG-jamming techniques used by the Word of Blake and more recently the Covenant of Blake in the war.

This software basically acts as an advanced firewall, protecting the HPG from certain kinds of attacks that might be inserted into an HPG transmission. Although it is still being tested, it is showing great promise.

Naturally ComStar is very interested in this technology, and ComStar researchers have been working with U-Wash’s Computer Sciences Department.

But U-Wash has had a rash of deaths and sabotage in recent months. A lab caught fire, a ComStar engineer was murdered, and two U-Wash personnel working on the project are missing. The most recent attempt, which involved a remotely piloted bomb, was stopped before it could detonate.

As a result we have stiffened our security measures. ComStar is providing some security and support for its engineers, so are the Lyran Intelligence Corps, who are currently engaged in quiet counter-intelligence operations in and around the U-Wash campus. We believe this is the work of the Covenant, and by extension, the Free Worlds League.

With the U-Wash campus now on high alert for spies and saboteurs, we are worried that the next incident may be more direct, an attack by a military force. Our security staff and hired consultants have laid out some horrifying scenarios.

With so many trading vessels coming and going from Donegal, it’s not an unreasonable proposition that a raiding force might pop up. With the benefits of speed and surprise, not to mention the support from spies and saboteurs on the ground, there is a very real concern that such a force could successfully attack U-Wash and then escape.

Our conversations with the planetary military on this matter have been shocking. The active defense plans assume a raid on Donegal’s military bases, dropship ports or the capital city. Other targets such as the Alliance Supreme Court and the Stock Exchange also seem to be of great concern to LAAF senior leaders. The commanders of the planetary defense seem to be discounting the likelihood of a raid on U-Wash. They have gone as far as to suggest such an operation would be a diversion from a real strike against a more meaningful target, and so they might not send troops to counter it for fear of leaving a strategic objective exposed. The LAAF doesn't seem to be properly evaluating the value of this technology, or the threat U-Wash is facing.

As a result, we are taking independent measures to ensure our security and defense.

Nashan Computers (and its parent company, Nashan Diversified) is a prominent corporate sponsor of U-Wash. They have agreed to partner with U-Wash’s President Collin Grady, Baron von Ludwigsburg, to hire a mercenary command. Mashan Diversified is covering the costs of this endeavor, but the unit will report to U-Wash’s president.

This command will not be based at U-Wash’s campus. On top of lacking the facilities for a military unit among a civilian university, it would be extremely unnerving to our students, faculty and staff to see such a prominent military force housed here. The current security measures are very professional, and subtle, with armed personnel wearing business suits rather than uniforms and carrying concealed weapons. LIC personnel are posing as students and staff. Much of the campus community is not fully aware of the situation and we want to keep it that way.

Nashan Computers has rented an abandoned Donegal Planetary Defense base in a wooded area on the continent. Your unit will housed there and this should be close enough for a rapid deployment in the event of a raid on U-Wash. Your public cover will be that you have been hired by Nashan Computers to protect a military R&D project being tested at that base. The lie will be close enough to the truth that it should stand up to scrutiny.

In addition, if we know that a raid is coming, the plan is to turn some of the base’s former ammunition storage facilities into a bunker. In the event of an actual attack, the idea would be to relocate the technology and everyone attached to the project to this complex. We want to avoid a fight on U-Wash’s campus if at all possible.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
1) Defend the HPG firewall technology
2) Limit collateral damage to U-Wash’s campus

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES:
1) Protect the project’s personnel
2) Limit interference in day-to-day U-Wash operations as an active civilian university
