Merton is a temperate world, mild in weather, with little in the way of mineral wealth found on the planet. The main industry is the lumber industry where tons of wood are exported annually from the vast forests that cover the planet. Despite centuries of logging, the rich environment, fast growth rate of the trees, and carefully followed plans of reforestation have not noticeably diminished these resources.

With little in the way of mineral wealth or technology production, Merton has not received much attention during the Succession Wars or during pirate raids from the Periphery. The Marian Hegemony has demonstrated some interest in the planet, but not enough to do more than raid to date.

Socio-Industrial Levels:
Technological Development
World of moderate advancement; average educational systems and medical care; microelectronics can not be manufactured.
Industrialization Level
Some industrialization at level of mid-20th century; fusion reactors imported.
Raw Material Dependence
World/system produces all the raw materials needed and occasionally exports a small surplus.
Industrial Output
World has a small industrial base that may produce a limited number of products for export.
Agricultural Dependence
World has a rich environment producing a great excess of food in relation to population needs, with planet’s agricultural regions augmented by agricultural technologies; exports some portion of its resources.

With much of the FWLM tied down to counter reprisals by other nations against the gains by Confederated Systems of Tikonov or reinforcing borders worlds, many comparatively less important Periphery systems were left virtually undefended. In the past year, systems in the Tamarind Military District like Sackville, Merton and Dalcour had been subjected to repeated raids not only from their long time nemesis, the Circinus Federation, but smaller roving bands of bandits and pirates as well. While the 5th Oriente Hussars, 3rd Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente and 5th Free Worlds Legionnaires are deployed in the nearby systems of Sierra for the Hussars and Maxwell for the other commands, they were reluctant to sally forth to hunt down Periphery reavers and leave their own home world vulnerable to raids. In the case of the Fusiliers, they have just been rotated back from the front lines and are only down to 50% strength.

Marshall Photon Brett-Marik had thus requested mercenary assistance in shoring up the meagre garrison of Merton, assisting in the build up of local troops. At the same time, the Tamarind Military District would like the employed mercenary command to confirm the identity of the raiders (if they do not indeed hail from the Federation) so their base of operations located for eradication at a later time. Force Commander Alexander Teague, commanding officer of the 1st Sierra Planetary Militia, is the local point of contact for this contract.
